UPS

Uninterruptible Power Supply

Protective hardware containing rechargeable batteries connected between the electrical outlet and (usually) a server, switchboard, or other critical device which will come online if the power supply fails. Also has the ability to even out "spikes" (peaks and troughs) in the power supply and combined with software running on the server will "down" a server if the power stays out beyond the capacity of the batteries.
