Firmware

Firmware is the software embedded in a hardware device that enables its most basic functions.  Most hardware devices include some form of firmware - even DVD players used for home entertainment include this.

Firmware is often upgradable using files available from the manufacturer.  Carefully follow the instructions provided with any firmware update, and be careful not to switch any devices off while they are upgrading.  Doing so could render them useless permanently!
