Twitter is certainly something that people have strong feelings about, whether they are for it or not. Some people, as is true with all social media tools, are REALLY for it or against. I'm a Twitter user, and have been for quite a while, which just means that I've had enough time on the tool to identify how it is useful for me - it's different for everyone.

As far as using Twitter in the sector...

- Here is a post about Tu Diabetes (a nonprofit) using Twitter: http://www.amysampleward.org/2008/09/04/twitter-at-use-for-tu-diabetes-community/

- Here is my post on "How Nonprofits Can Use Twitter": http://www.amysampleward.org/2008/01/10/how-can-nonprofits-use-twitter/

- Here is the roundup of responses to "How Nonprofits Can Use Twitter":
http://www.netsquared.org/blog/britt-bravo/net2thinktank-how-can-nonprofits-use-twitter

- Here are some of Beth Kanter's posts on Twitter:
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/twitter/

If you want to check out some Twitter accounts from nonprofits:

(Remember, when looking at the above accounts, when you see @____ that denotes a conversation with/message for another Twitter-er, so you can click on that name and check them out, too!)

Hope that helps keep the conversation and investigation going!

I don't have many examples from UK but do have a lot of experience with US groups using wiki. The examples really vary as wiki provide for many, many options of use:

- nonprofits who put on a workshop for other nonprofits and community members put up a wiki to contain information about the event leading up to it, links and resources needed day-of, as well as areas for follow-up, conversations, and ongoing q/a after the event

- nonprofits with staff working cross-departmentally on projects use wiki internally for teams to collaborate on work, access information, documents and other resources remotely, and share/track project information

- nonprofits who rely on a large number of volunteers to run or maintain programs create a wiki for use instead of allowing access to the internal network/shared file system/etc. so volunteer staff can still create and share documents, timelines, track conversations, capture learning

The examples can just keep going! The first thing to think about, isn't how you can use a wiki, but what you need to do regardless of the technology tool. Maybe what you are in need of most, isn't a wiki. But maybe it is!

Thanks for asking,

There has been quite a lot of talk recently about using a wiki for sharing ICT information and experiences across the sector.

I can see how wikis would be really useful in certain areas, for those people who don't have too much experience of them have a look at the Knowledgebase article Exploring the World of Wikis - http://www.ictknowledgebase.org.uk/exploringwikis

So to get round to my question has anyone got experience of running a wiki or a really useful wiki being used in the voluntary and community sector in Britain?

Good points.

Google likes sites with content that it judges to be highly 'relevant' to a user's search.

You're right, Google is secretive of exactly how it judges that (to avoid spammers misusing that info to trick their way to the top) - but what it means for your site (and mine) is quite simple.

• Lots of keyword-rich content that's of value to your target market - written by real people about things they really know about for real people.

• Genuine inbound links from other respected sites that are relevant to your content. Not link-exchanged, bought or faked.

• Regular change and visitor activity

There are some of the main components of how Google determines 'relevance'. It's also why blogs are so effective in terms of fast Google visibility - because the software is designed specifically to do the above things.

As you pointed out, Suzanne, working out your keywords is the place to start - and probably the hardest part of the whole process. Most of us can't help but think of what we do in our own terms rather than how someone else might search.

Hi luistaim, there are loads of people waiting to bite your hand off to sell you a 'video email package' - from MLM-based companies like VMDirect (offering you a media hosting package) to business video producers selling streaming services.

Whatever you do, content is king - and badly shot, badly lit and/or badly sound-recorded video can damage your image faster than it can build it, so consider carefully whether or not you have the media skills in the company to do a good job of creating and recording the content you intend to distribute.

A simple way to try whether video works for you in terms of your marketing and communication is to experiment with YouTube or Viddler. Record video, upload, send link to prospects / colleagues in email. Get feedback.

Cost? Zero.

If it doesn't work as a form of communication there, I suspect it wouldn't work ANY better with a 'video email' provider charging you a fortune to do it. It's the content that matters more than how people get to it.

If video DOES work for you there, then you could consider adding a respected email newsletter management company [EDIT: Eeeek - not me, I don't do that stuff, I hasten to add :-)] to the mix as a way of distributing your links and monitoring who clicks through to your videos.

How do you write and organise web content so it pops up on the front page of Google? The front page is where we want to be as most people don't go beyond the first page.

- Key words
A good place to start is to make sure the words you write into your web copy are the same words that people are typing in at Google.

Example 1: a museum uses the words 'Family activities' on its website, as that phrase has been signed off by the marketing dept. But the public usually searches for 'Kids stuff'. End result: the public phones to complain the museum has no kids activities.

Example 2: a museum uses the words 'the collection', while the public searches for 'paintings'. End result: the museum's website doesn't appear on page 1 of Google even though it has shed loads of paintings. It could mean fewer visitors through the doors.

- Identifying key words for your sector or organisation
How do you find out what the public is typing at Google?

There are free online tools for you to explore popular terms http://www.freekeyworddiscoverytool.com
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Once you know the key terms, feature these words in body copy, headings, page title (as well as in navigation and URLs when you're designing your site) as these are looked at by Google.

- Links etc
Key words are just one aspect of SEO - other things that help you appear on the front page of Google include whether any authoritative websites (eg bbc.co.uk) link to you, how often you refresh content and ...

Further reading?
Can anyone recommend any websites (I'm a newcomer to SEO). There are ebooks - I read one by a Google consultant called Steve Johnston http://www.johnston.co.uk - goes into more detail than I need but gives a little insight into the way that Google works - apparently Google is quite secretive about how its search works.

Consultancy
There seems to be a whole industry out there, an army of Search Engine Optimisation consultants who, for a fee, will come into your organisation and show you how to get onto the first page of Google. Some of their recommendations will be quick wins: 'Change the name of X to Y' others will require more effort: 'Merge yr website with your sister organisation's website'.

As comments in the BBC article suggests, guidelines rather than banning is probably the way to go. There is obviously a risk as with anything that staff may abuse the "privilege" but having clear guidelines and monitoring in place should help.

Also, there are charities and non profits using Facebook and other social networking sites in interesting ways for legitimate work reasons.
Pertinax, podcasting speakers is a great way to engage wider audiences and it's something we specialise in doing but I'm more than happy to advise what you need and point you to some of the resources I recommend.

You need a good audio recorder, some software to edit, a hosting service for your audio and the ability to promote/distribute the link to your audio (either simply for people to play by clicking links on your web site or, better, as a 'podcast' that people can subscribe to').

I've got some resources I've written on our website here:

http://www.mukaumedia.co.uk/podcast/
http://www.mukaumedia.co.uk/what-is-podcasting/
http://www.mukaumedia.co.uk/make-your-own-podcast/

there are examples of keynote speaker podcasts on the site too under the 'podcasting' tab, just so you can get an idea of what's possible with equipment costing less than £500.

Hope that's useful

I use WordPress for most of my websites e.g. www.greekcare.org.au. It's great for website editors because it makes creating content really easy. It has most of the CMS functionality you need for a small to medium-sized organisation's website. And as mukaumedia noted, it's very search engine friendly.

The problem is with the themes. There are thousands of free themes you can download, many of them very well-designed. But they're all blogging themes, with an emphasis on commenting, not CMS themes. WordPress did start out as a blogging tool but it's evolved into a credible CMS: sadly the theme designers don't seem to have noticed.

Second what SteveC says about Wordpress,

It really needs that 'champion' who's prepared to learn as it goes because it's a great plaftform (with great search engine visibility) but doing anything other than just posting text to the default theme gets quite technical quite quickly.

Hi,
Re: copyright of podcast content

- copyright
As you probably suspect already, you'd need to get permission from the owner/originator of the audio/video/text. Then you'd need to credit the source of the content in yr podcast - the owner/originator might request that you use certain wording for the credit line.

- Fact checking. But rather than insert someone else's audio/video, I'd want to fact check the content that I was inserting - go back and interview the original source contacts. Otherwise it risks perpetuating inaccuracies. Think of what happens when journalists cannibalise each others' stories - we end up with a myth that sticks.

Btw, I don't actually make podcasts, I just do the housekeeping - I write metadata for itunes etc. I try and breeze along at a non-technical level.

Hi Suzanne,
;-) enthusiasm is my middle name - I think podcasting's great, in fact we just did one this morning, inspired by reading and contributing to this thread. We've not made one for a couple of months and have been planning a new one, so just dived in.

It's going to be a podcast focusing on 'online reputation management' - the power of online media to build - and damage - any organisation's reputation.

This first-of-many podcast was us responding to a dreadful bit of media PR from Ryan air (as featured on the Today show on R4)... we're just off to find out what the rules are on featuring content from someone else's podcast in ours.

Do you make podcasts yourself? Or for your organisation?

Hi there,

Thanks for this.

I realise my initial posting might have been offputting - I made podcasting sound like there was no point doing it unless you produce a perfect thing etc. It's good to have some enthusiasm injected.

I accept that organisations need to spend time trying things out to see what works and what doesn't.

Currently, I just use it for 'quick news' on my Wordpress site. In that capacity, it's a great, free way of updating where I am what I'm doing from my mobile :-) Bargain!

As to all the 'following / follower' stuff... I've yet to find how that can be useful. The first guy I 'followed' puts out 20+ tweets a day which fill my entire window when I log into Twitter, kind of overkill.

Hope that helps!
